Sunday Morning Rolls

What better way to spend a lazy Sunday than to bake fresh Cinnamon Roll, perfect for a crisp December morning. Here’s a look at a simple recipe I found on one of my favourite blogs, Style Me Pretty Living. Best part is the delicious smell that remained throughout our home for the rest of the day!

Enjoy!

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

PREP TIME
1 Hour/s 30 Minute/s
COOK TIME
30 Minute/s
TOTAL TIME
2 Hour/s

Ingredients

  • FOR THE ROLLS:
  • 1 quart Whole Milk
  • 1 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 pkgs. Active Dry Yeast (0.25 oz.Packets)
  • 8 cups (plus 1 cup extra, reserved) All-purpose Flour
  • 1 heaping tsp. Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp. (scant) Baking Soda
  • 1 heaping Tbsp. Salt
  • Softened Butter (lots!)
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • FOR THE FROSTING:
  • 1 bag Powdered Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup Butter, softened
  • 1/8 tsp. Salt

Instructions

  1. FOR THE ROLLS:
  2. Heat the milk, vegetable oil, and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat until it almost boils. Turn off the heat, let it cool to 120 degrees and sprinkle yeast. Let it sit on the mixture for 1 minute before stiring.
  3. Add the flour and stir until just combined. Cover with a clean towel and set aside in a warm spot (sunny windowsill!?) for an hour.
  4. Remove the towel and add the baking powder, baking soda, salt and remaining cup of flour and stir until combined.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  6. To make the rolls, remove half the dough from your bowl and roll it out into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface (it should be 10″ x 30″ and quite thin).
  7. For the filling, evenly spread 3/4-1 cup softened butter over the dough. Generously sprinkle cinnamon and 1 cup of sugar overtop. Don’t be afraid to drizzle on more butter or more sugar! Gooey is good!
  8. Starting at the end farthest away from you, start rolling the rectangle tightly towards you, working slowly. If the filling starts popping out the sides it’s okay! When you’re finished, turn it so that the seam is laying on the table.
  9. Place the log on a cutting board and slice it into 1/2″ wide slices. You should get about 20-25 rolls.
  10. Coat a disposable foil pan in softened butter. Place the rolls in the pan (try not to overcrowd!)
  11. Repeat with the other half of the dough.
  12. Cover the pans with clean towels and let sit for 20 minutes.
  13. Remove the towel and bake in oven for 15-18 minutes. You don’t want them to brown too much.
  14. FOR THE FROSTING
  15. Meanwhile, make the icing in a large bowl. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, butter and salt. Splash in the vanilla extract.
  16. Whisk until very smooth. Taste and add more ingredients as you’d like. It should be slightly thick, but still pourable.
  17. Once the rolls have been removed from the oven, immediately drizzle the icing on top. They will absorb all that goodness.

Diner en Blanc

Being a fan of all things Parisian I had always longed to travel to Paris and attend the fabulous Dîner en Blanc. This past August myself and a dear friend, Jessica Blumel (creative blogger behind North Shore Mama) were invited to attend the Dîner en Blanc Vancouver, and words cannot describe how amazing, and truly majestic this evening was.

For those of you who may not be familiar with this event,  Dîner en Blanc launched with just a handful of friends lead by François Pasquier over 25 years ago in France. Paris’ Dîner en Blanc now assembles nearly 15,000 people each year. The French capital’s most prestigious sites have played host to it: the Pont des Arts, the Eiffel Tower site, Place Vendôme, the Château de Versailles, the Esplanade de Notre-Dame, the Esplanade des Invalides, the periphery of the Place de l’Étoile, the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Dîner en Blanc launched on 5 continents, and the wait lists continue to grow! This year the Vancouver chapter had over 10,000 guests on a wait list, so you can imagine our pure excitement when we got the call to attend this amazing event!

My personal highlights from the evening included, the alluring musique Française, stunning executives tables adorned with hanging orchids (decorated by the talented Flowerz Inc), as well as the Sparklers lit by all guests apres dîner! Dinning on the grass fields with the Vancouver horizon as our backdrop, and toasting complete strangers dressed luxuriouosly in white attire made for an unforgettable evening!

Here’s a few photos from this incredible journey! À la prochaine fois!

Nude shoes!

With wedding season springing ahead, a few brides have asked me for help seeking out the perfect shoe to complete their look. While white, silver, gold & even blue (reference Hangisi Jeweled pump, Manolo Blahnik) shoes have been worn in the past, nude shoes are also noteworthy. They are a fantastic choice, as the colour nude is an elegant but understated look, that is both modern & glamorous.
While shopping for shoes, keep in mind the length of your dress, as well as comfort! Be sure to take your time trying different styles (peep-toe vs. a classic pump), and take note of the heel (height). Comfort is key, as you’re likely to wear these shoes the entire day. And while I love a gorgeous high heel, try to stick to heights (heel) that you are confident with. After all, poise & grace are a must for any bride.

Take a look at some of my favorite nude shoes, available from Nordstrom (and yes, they ship to Canada). I love the stunning classic Couture Bow, by Valentino, what about you?

Local talent: Papier by Judy

A few weeks ago I had a lovely meeting with the very stylish & creative proprietor behind Papier by Judy. I first met JudyPhan at the Crème Show this past year, but today had a chance to sample first-hand her beautiful custom-made cards and papier. Having a creative background, I too share Judy’s love of papier and appreciate all the detail & time that goes into each of her unique, custom designed cards. And let me tell you, the possibilities are endless (when it comes to papier that is). Looking through her perfectly arranged box of cards & papier, I recalled myself six years ago, going through tons of wedding invitation catalogues. I also remembered feeling very overwhelmed, as there were simply, too many options. I think I looked through half a dozen binders, each filled with over 100 samples (yes it was quite the hunt)!

Luckily for all you brides out there, Judy first takes the time (a good chunk of it) to get to know her clients, their colours, themes, and most of all, overall idea, and of course budget needs, when it comes to wedding stationary. Then she can present brides (and grooms too of course) with fewer, but more selective & appropriate options, which cater to their taste. And let me tell you, she’s very quick to whip-up or pull out just the right design after sitting down and chatting with you. Her creativitiy, attention to detail, and pure love of her work, are very prominent in her pieces, and very refreshing indeed. From West-Coast style 100% recyclable paper, to papier embedded with herb and flower seeds, to my personal favorite, Eco-friendly wood-paper invitations made of Oak & Maple (yes I am referring to trees), she has it all!

Be sure to check out her website gallery & blog for more infomation on her work. And keep in mind, her pieces are custom-made, so if you don’t see it on her site doesn’t mean she can’t or hasn’t created it! Also, check out her recent You-Tube video, which a great introduction to her fabulous work. Enjoy.
