Will you be my bridesmaid?
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. The bridesmaids, who stand next to you, should be considered carefully.
Before asking, it’s important to recognize not only your relationship but what level of involvement you expect from the bridal party. Whether it be time obligations, helping coordinate the pre-wedding festivities or financial commitments.
You will want to consider their attitude and energy, and how they may impact your special day. Who brings you joy and positivity? Consider the energy you want to surround you.
Do not feel like you need to ask a bridesmaid out of obligation. You may have been asked to stand next to a cousin or at a friend’s wedding. Do not feel compelled to return the favour. Your cousin or lifelong friend may have been by your side through thick and thin. They might not have the time to commit to the responsibilities your wedding day will entail.
Things to think about
Friends and family who hold a special place in your heart can still be part of the big day but do not necessarily need to be part of the wedding party. For instance, consider pre-wedding festivities such as a bachelorette party that includes more than the bridal party. Invite that special person to join wedding dress shopping and perhaps the rehearsal dinner. Ask a close friend or cousin to join the wedding day morning activities. That could include makeup and hair, a morning mimosa, or a pre-ceremony dress reveal. These are also all great photo ops, and you should feel comfortable asking your photographers and videographers to capture certain guests at particular times.
After selecting your bridesmaids, it is important to have an open and honest conversation with your bridal party. Depending on the magnitude of your wedding and the role of your wedding coordinator, you’ll want to set clear expectations and let them know what bridesmaid duty might entail.
Select a core group of special people who bring you joy. The celebration will make your day that much more relaxing and enjoyable.
